April 21, 2006—Noting that “the property services industry in both Australia and New Zealand is in crisis”, the Liquor Hospitality and Miscellaneous Union (Australia) and the Service and Food Workers Union Nga Ringa Tota (Aoteoroa/New Zealand) have initiated Clean Start, Fair Deal For Cleaners.
The Clean Start document, A Clean Start For The Property Services Industry, states there is an alternative to low cleaner incomes, recruitment problems and poor service quality. “The industry needs to agree on and implement benchmarks for contracting. Contractors tendering for work need to know what kind of service delivery is necessary to satisfy the needs of owners.” There are 10 Clean Start ‘principles’, which “constitute an expression of intent” by owners, managers, contractors and the Union.
The 24-page Clean Start document presents a case these principals. To learn more, visit the LHMU Web site.
