Clinton Talks Up School Construction with Leadership

At the Abigail Adams School (P.S. 131) in Jamaica, Queens, N.Y., President Clinton pushed for school modernization and construction funding. Specifically, he urged Congress to pass his school construction proposal, which contains $25 billion in School Modernization Bonds and $6.5 billion in Urgent School Renovation Loans and Grants. The president said that in this strong economy there is no better investment than upgrading the future educational quality of children. Barbara Nadel, FAIA, 2001 AIA vice president, was in attendance at the event. AIA is also urging Congress to pass legislation that will “provide federal support—rather than federal control—in the form of tax credit bonds,” and emphasizes that “nearly $200 billion is needed for school infrastructure improvement and architects can help with the solution.”
