October 25, 2006—The EPA’s Green Power Partnership’s College and University Green Power Challenge, launched in the summer of 2006, pits the 16 collegiate athletic conferences against one another in a competition to buy the most green power.
Recently, the Ivy League was far ahead of its challengers, with the University of Pennsylvania leading the charge. The Big Ten Conference was in second, with Northwestern leading the way. The Atlantic Coast Conference was third, led by Duke.
The GPP also updated its sector-specific College and University Top 10 list on September 22. The list reflects renewable energy purchases made by GPP Partners through the beginning of September.
The University of Pennsylvania maintained its spot as the top purchaser of green power among leading colleges and universities, followed by: 1. University of Pennsylvania, 2. California State University System, 3. Duke University, 4. Northwestern University, 5. Western Washington University, 6. University of Utah, 7. University of Central Oklahoma, 8. Syracuse University, 9. University of Washington, and 10. The City University of New York.
In the summer of 2007, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will conclude the challenge and recognize a Champion Green Power Conference as well as the largest single purchasers within each participating conference as 2006 Green Power Challenge conference champions.
