Colorado task force to sponsor computer recycling events

May 1, 2002—The Computer and Electronics Recycling Task Force, a public-private group formed by the Governor’s Office of Energy Management and Conservation (OEMC), examined computer recycling processes and issues within Colorado and has assisted in the design and selection of these events.

The primary goals of the recycling events are to prevent computers, some of which may contain hazardous chemicals, from being dumped in landfills, to educate consumers about the issues surrounding computer waste and to gather data that will serve to mainstream and improve future collection events.

“We want to share our understanding of the issues and feasibility of computer recycling in Colorado. The Task Force’s recommendations will enable Colorado communities to effectively collect, re-use and properly dispose of the growing electronic computer waste, which could otherwise be a nuisance or possible health and safety threat,” said Rick Grice, executive director of the OEMC.

Collection events will be held in June through September of 2002, and will cover the eastern prairie to the Western Slope. The computer recycling events will accept monitors, CPUs, keyboards, scanners, printers and other computer peripherals. There will be a nominal charge in order to offset overall recycling costs. For further information on these collection events, contact Susan Castellon at 303/894-2383, ext. 1223, or visit the OEMC Web site.
