The US Department of Commerce figures show that construction spending rose 2.4 percent in September 2000 to an annually adjusted rate of $819.3 billion. This marks the biggest monthly increase since the hike of 2.6 percent in November 1999. Nonresidential construction grew 3.4 percent, and office building scored 6.2 percent. Factory, hotel, and hospital also gained; government building projects posted a 3.5 percent increase with school construction up 5.3 percent.
