Company turns used cooking oil and grease into fuel for industrial boilers

December 9, 2002—Burbank Grease Services, a part of the Anamax Group, has discovered a way to turn used cooking oil into “Yellow Grease”—an alternative fuel source used for firing industrial boilers. This product not only preserves the environment by burning cleaner than oil, but also saves money.

One company that began using the fuel, Fraser Papers’ Park Falls division in Wisconsin, expects to save over $40,000 by displacing close to one million gallons of #6 fuel oil each year. That’s enough oil saved to heat almost one thousand homes. By replacing the #6 fuel oil with Yellow Grease, the company is able to maintain interruptible natural gas service. Fraser Papers was introduced to the fuel by Wisconsin’s Focus on Energy program, which provided key technical and financial assistance to implement this renewable energy project.

Yellow Grease burns substantially cleaner than oil, which results in less maintenance required for boilers and fewer harmful environmental impacts. In addition, the price and supply of Yellow Grease is generally stable, whereas oil prices are prone to global market forces and fluctuate accordingly.
