Congressional Democrats draft energy bill; omit drilling in the ANWR

An alternative energy bill has been introduced by Congressional Democrats that promotes the production of renewable energy sources, similar to the Republican proposal (S. 389). The Democrats “Comprehensive and Balanced Energy Policy Act of 2001” however, does not propose to drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR).

Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-NM), Ranking Minority Member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee introduced the energy policy, which is co-sponsored by Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD) and nine other Democrats.

The bill would increase energy supplies from all sources, including oil, gas, and renewable sources; decrease demand through increased energy efficiency for buildings, appliances, and cars; provide funds for energy-related research and development; invest in technology to reduce pollution from power plants; and address electricity problems by increasing and improving transmission facilities.
