July 5, 2004—The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) is calling for a strategic approach to assessing risk on all construction sites, in response to the recent National Audit Office (NAO) inquiry into the UKs construction industry health and safety records.

The NAO report found that in 2002-2003, 226 workers in the UK were fatally injured. Of these, 71 were construction workers, the highest contribution to the overall total from any sector of the economy. A further 4,780 construction workers were reported as having suffered a major injury.

The CIOB is pushing for a strategic approach in dealing with the problem at a national level, drawing together all organizations that can influence the industrys health and safety and not just the industrys umbrella bodies.
