March 23, 2005—The number one issue facing both the construction and facilities management sectors is skills shortage at every level according to delegates at a recent networking event held in Bedford, UK.
The event was organized by Business Link for Bedfordshire and Luton, with support from the British Institute of Facilities Management and the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health. It heralded the launch of a new sector networking initiative for companies and professionals with an interest in the design, construction and management of the built environment.
During breakout sessions, delegates were asked to identify the issues facing the sector today. An overwhelming consensus identified inadequacies in the current labor market caused by a shortage of skilled labor as the most pressing concern. Other key topics identified for future discussion included business development and best practice operations.
