December 17, 2001—The Department of the Navy (DON) recently received a record sixteen of forty-four 2001 Federal Energy and Water Management Program (FEMP) Awards—an energy efficiency competition sponsored by the US Department of Energy and open to all federal agencies.
Two DON entities—Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni (Japan), and Navy Regional Southwest (San Diego, Calif.)—also received Presidential Awards for outstanding commitment to energy savings programs.
Among its other energy conservation achievements, DON is committed to reducing energy consumption per square foot by 35 percent by 2015, compared to baseline 1985. As of fiscal year 2000, DON shore energy consumption had dropped more than 26 percent, avoiding more than $500 million in energy costs.
