Dept. of Homeland Security adopts first radiological and nuclear detectors standards

March 26, 2004—The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has adopted its first radiological and nuclear detectors standards. Approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), these standards are designed to assist federal agencies, state and local officials, and manufacturers in procurement decisions related to radiological and nuclear detection equipment.

The guidelines provide performance standards and test methods, as well as minimum characteristics for four classes of radiation detection equipment ranging from hand-held alarming detectors to radiation portal monitors for cargo containers.

The four standards documents, ANSI N42.32-2003, ANSI N42.33-2003, ANSI N42.34-2003, and ANSI N42.35-2003 are available from ANSI.
