April 15, 2002—The US Department of Energy (DOE) recently selected five industry teams to receive a total of $9 million to conduct research, development, and testing of distributed energy resources in the data processing and telecommunications industries. The teams will work to develop systems that improve power quality and reliability.
Distributed energy resources can respond to power quality and reliability needs of the data processing and communications industry by locally generating clean, reliable power. In addition, a blend of combined heat and power, distributed generation, and energy storage can have significant impact in ensuring reliability and improving efficiency. When energy storage devices are coupled with distributed generation, uninterruptible power can be provided.
