DOE offers online course on workplace lighting efficiency

February 13, 2002—The Federal Energy Management Program of the US Department of Energy (DOE) offers a Web-based distance learning class on lighting efficiency called FEMP Lights. FEMP Lights online training focuses on managing lighting efficiency retrofits for the workplace. It is designed for facilities Energy Managers, or anyone who wants to get up-to-date on lighting efficiency. The class addresses workplace lighting, including offices, institutional, industrial and warehouse spaces, but not outdoor lighting, retail, or residential lighting. The course complements other FEMP workshops by stressing the impact of efficient lighting on whole building energy savings, and using life cycle cost analysis. Enrollees will learn to use all the lighting resources available, including the Internet, magazines, catalogs, various software packages, and class texts.

There are no pre-requisites and course materials can be downloaded from the class Web site at the enrollee’s workplace or home. The lessons include color photographs and animated illustrations. The instructors and students communicate online, with opportunities for questions to the instructors. For further help, Edmonds Community College also offers distance learning courses on using the Internet and basic software skills. The course is self-paced, requiring around three to five hours of independent study time per section, over the nine sections. Three college credits will be given upon completion, as well as 36 credits in re-accreditation for NCQLP Lighting Certification. The course is available on a pass/not pass basis.

The course fee is $37, payable to the Edmonds Community College. The electronic text for this course is Advanced Lighting Guidelines 2001, which must be downloaded by the student from the New Buildings Institute Web site. Course registration is open from February 25 -March 29, 2002, by phone: 425/640-1101 or fax: 425/640-1047. For additional information from EdCC, contact Mollie Ecalbarger at 425/640-1101.
