The Department of Education (DOE) is working on a draft plan to disperse $1.2 billion in school renovation funds by May-June 2001. The Urgent School Rehabilitation program provides $1.2 billion for grants to local education agencies (LEAs) for emergency school renovation and repair activities, some new construction, and technology activities.
Recipients of the funds will include state education agencies (SEAs), LEAs with at least 50 percent of their student population living on Native American or Native Alaskan lands, and a Charter School Construction Demonstration project.
