April 15, 2005—An article in Energy Washington Week notes that Duke Energy chief Paul Anderson’s call on Congress to enact a “carbon tax” is being viewed as evidence of a possible industry shift to nuclear power over coal.
According to the article, Duke Energy is only one of many electric utilities—including Cinergy and American Electric Power (AEP)—asking for some form of carbon regulation. But Duke goes beyond the others to lobby for a carbon tax instead of for capping and trading carbon emissions.
Anderson’s recent comments also come in the wake of an announcement that the North Carolina-based utility is looking into building a new nuclear power plant in its service area. Duke currently owns three nuclear stations with seven reactor units, the article notes.
