October 31, 2003—An education subcommittee for ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 62-2001, Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality, has been formed. Its goal is to develop a comprehensive educational and outreach program, according to chair Eli Howard. Standard 62 sets minimum ventilation rates and other requirements for commercial and institutional buildings.
“Our goal is to give users the tools they need to understand and apply the standard to the benefit of their HVAC design, which ultimately will provide for better functioning facilities and improved indoor air quality,” Howard said.
The subcommittee’s efforts also include continuing development of the companion guideline to the standard. Proposed Guideline 19P, Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality, would provide practices and procedures for the design, installation, and operation and maintenance of building HVAC systems. A first public review is expected next year.
Suggested outreach that the committee has discussed include:
- ASHRAE technical program seminars on use and application of Standard 62-2001 and forums to gather additional information on what users would like to see in an educational program;
- Development of an online tutorial on ASHRAE.org;
- Guest lectures at ASHRAE chapters on the standard, similar to programs held regarding ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings;
- Educational sessions to other associations with similar missions.
