Electric City’s EnergySaver technology saves garage lighting expenses by half in downtown Chicago

May 1, 2002—Electric City’s EnergySaver technology has produced significant savings at the Chicago Park District and the Museum of Science & Industry, helping to meet the City of Chicago’s goal of reducing citywide energy use by 30 percent by 2010.

Chicago’s Museum of Science & Industry EnergySaver installations in two parking garages’ metal halide lighting systems have reduced electrical consumption by as much as 48 percent. Because the facilities are lit continuously, the savings add up quickly, with energy savings of more than 7,235 kilowatts over the past nine months.

Likewise, from November 1999 through August 2001, Chicago Park District’s EnergySaver units have reduced electricity consumed on lighting by 2.37 million kilowatt hours. The energy saved avoided the emission of 2.11 million pounds of carbon dioxide, 6,843 pounds of nitrous oxide, and 6,406 pounds of sulphur dioxide that would have been created in the generation of that electricity by utility companies.

Electric City’s GlobalCommander software networks the lighting systems at the Park District’s multiple locations using the EnergySaver, so energy consumption at each site can be controlled and tracked individually over the Internet from a central location with a few mouse clicks.
