September 7, 2001—A subsidiary of Emerson is launching production of the world’s largest scroll compressor for use in commercial air conditioning systems. The new Copeland Scroll 25-horsepower compressor is the first of its kind, based on a technology capable of delivering higher energy efficiency than the reciprocating and screw compressor designs that traditionally have been applied in the commercial market. These large compressors power 20- to 200-ton air conditioning systems and chillers found in shopping centers, office buildings and hospitals.
Beginning in October 2001, a new industry efficiency standard in the United States will require commercial systems to boost energy levels from 10 to 15 percent. Replacing an older commercial air conditioning unit with a new unit containing a Copeland Scroll compressor significantly reduces energy consumption. Depending on the location in the U.S., the expected energy cost savings range from 20 to 30 percent.
The U.S. industry is also currently phasing out of ozone-depleting refrigerants and must transition to environmentally friendly Hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants by 2010, as mandated by an international agreement.
