Energy Star challenge: “Change a Light, Change the World”

November 19, 2001—Energy Star is joining retailers, manufacturers, and utilities in Portland, Oregon, and around America to kick off a campaign encouraging every household to make their next light an Energy Star. Throughout October and November, 2001, Energy Star and its partners will show consumers in the Northwest that something as simple as changing a light bulb or a fixture can save energy, money, and help the environment.

As part of the campaign, called “Change a Light, Change the World,” Energy Star partners are donating energy-efficient lighting products to schools and charitable organizations to help reduce energy consumption and lower energy bills. In Portland, the Bonneville Power Administration, Pacific Power, and Portland General Electric will donate 4,500 energy-efficient light bulbs to seventh graders in the Portland Public School district. These donations will save the people of Portland nearly $112,000 in energy bills.

During “Change a Light, Change the World,” partners will make energy-efficient lighting products available to all consumers through local, regional, and national promotions, including a national sweepstakes.

Energy Star, jointly managed by the EPA and the US Department of Energy, gives consumers an easy way to identify energy-efficient appliances, electronics, office equipment, lighting, heating and cooling equipment, buildings, and homes.
