November 6, 2002—Two studies recently released by Innovest Strategic Value Advisors, a financial research firm, found that companies active in the Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star Buildings Program outperformed peers that were less active or not involved in the program.
Innovest conducted comprehensive analysis of energy management in the retail food and commercial real estate sectors. In the real estate sector, leaders in energy management, taken as a group, outperformed laggards by nearly 3500 basis points over the past two years. In the retail food sector, leaders outperformed laggards by nearly 2000 basis points over the past three years. In both sectors, leading performance on energy management was highly correlated with Energy Star involvement.
Energy Star is a voluntary labeling initiative supporting energy-efficient products and energy management in residential and commercial buildings. The program is designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
