September 23, 2005—The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has added seven sites and proposed five additional sites to the National Priorities List (NPL) of Superfund sites. A former chlorine manufacturer, a hard rock mine, a commercial grain elevator, and an electroplating facility are among the seven new sites, according to EPA.
With the addition of these sites, which were selected because of their degree of risk to human health and to sensitive environments, there are now a total of 1,307 final and proposed sites on the list.
EPA says that designating appropriate sites to the NPL helps protect public health, clean up the nation’s hazardous waste, and encourage economic revitalization and land reuse. For more information about the Superfund sites, visit EPA.
