EPA announces clean diesel campaign, retrofit grants

March 25, 2005—The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced a new Clean Diesel Campaign that affects construction vehicles and other fleets.

As part of the campaign, EPA announced $1.6 million in grants for 18 diesel engine retrofit projects. The recipients will retrofit diesel vehicles and equipment with advanced technologies and cleaner fuels to reduce emissions of particulate matter (soot) and other pollutants. The grants reflect a wide variety of projects, including construction, agriculture and port equipment, waste haulers, locomotives, fire trucks, and ambulances across the country. For more information on the grantees and the retrofit projects, visit EPA/VDRP.

EPA also announced an initiative to develop guidance for states to adopt consistent idling laws for heavy-duty trucks and buses. EPA will convene representatives from state air pollution control agencies, trucking associations, truck drivers, environmental organizations, and health associations to develop a model state or local idling law.
