EPA grants $70 million for brownfields cleanup

June 14, 2006—The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has granted $69.9 million to “help transform community eyesores into community gems” in 44 states and two territories, as well as three tribal areas. The grants promote the redevelopment of abandoned and contaminated or potentially contaminated waste sites, or “brownfields.” In all, 209 applicants were selected to receive 292 grants for assessment or cleanup of properties. For more information on EPA’s Brownfields program or the grant recipients, or before/after photos of sample brownfields projects, visit EPA’s Web site.
