EPA lists top Fortune 500 Green Power Partner purchases

May 25, 2007—The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released a list of top purchasers of green power as of April 9, 2007, among its Fortune 500 Green Power Partners. EPA’s Fortune 500 Challenge is a 13-month campaign focusing on the collective green power purchases of eligible Fortune 500 companies. EPA is challenging the companies to double their current level of green power purchasing, with a goal of a combined total of more than five billion kWh of green power by the end of 2007.

PepsiCo moved to the top of the list with its recent purchase of more than 1.1 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh)—100 percent of the company’s total electricity use and the largest green power purchase to date under the Green Power Partner program, notes EPA. Johnson & Johnson, Nike, and Applied Materials also moved up in the challenge as a result of increased purchases, and Baxter Health Care corporate headquarters found its first ranking in the challenge.
