EPA names first charter member in its environmental performance program

Epson Portland Inc. is the first company to meet the high standards to qualify as a charter member of the National Environmental Performance Track, a new program of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The program was launched to motivate and reward environmental performance that exceeds traditional pollution control requirements. Epson Portland, of Hillsboro, Oregon, was selected from more than 100 applications for charter membership.

By the end of 1999, the company voluntarily had reduced landfill wastes by 60 percent, lowered air emissions by 75 percent and increased its recycling program. Further pollution prevention is planned, and there is a commitment to use a “green” purchasing approach for its raw products.
