EPA names Herman Miller “WasteWise” Champion

November 20, 2002—The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has named Herman Miller, Inc., a WasteWise 2002 Program Champion in the large business category. This is the fourth year in a row that the major furniture manufacturer has earned the distinction.

The EPA sponsors WasteWise as a free, voluntary partnership program designed to help organizations save money by reducing and managing their solid waste. Through waste prevention, WasteWise partners help to significantly reduce the emission of greenhouse gases by conserving raw materials and the energy used to create products.

WasteWise partners also keep materials out of landfills and incinerators by boosting their recycling efforts. In 2001 alone, Herman Miller recycled or otherwise prevented more than 3,000 tons of paper, 6,500 tons of steel, 2,900 tons of wood, 380 tons of mixed plastics, and 700 tons of textiles from entering landfills.

Herman Miller and other award-winning companies were honored at the WasteWise 2002 Annual Meeting and Awards Ceremony held October 10 in Washington, DC. Herman Miller first received WasteWise honors in 1995, and has been an EPA award-winner in each consecutive year since 1998.
