EPA releases rating system to improve manufacturing facility energy efficiency

July 4, 2005 — The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released its first energy efficiency rating system for manufacturing facilities. The new rating system for auto assembly plants, developed jointly with the auto industry, compares the energy efficiency of an entire individual assembly plant producing passenger cars, light duty trucks, sport utility vehicles, or vans in the US to that of the entire industry.

Energy Star Industrial Focus has been initiated for motor vehicle, cement, and pharmaceutical manufacturing in addition to the corn and petroleum refining industries. A separate focus is underway for water and wastewater treatment plants operated by local governments and sanitary services companies.

The Energy Performance Indicator (EPI) is available for download from the Energy Star Web site.
