EPA releases top 10 college, university green power users

February 28, 2007—The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released its quarterly list, finalized January 8, 2007, of its Top 10 College and University Partners. These schools are the EPA Green Power Partners with the largest completed green power purchases in the higher education sector.

The combined green power purchases of these Top 10 Partners equals nearly 634 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) annually, which is equivalent to the electricity needed to power an estimated 51,000 average American homes annually, says EPA.

EPA highlighted Top 10 newcomer New York University, which leapt into first place by meeting all its electricity needs with wind power, for a total of 118.6 million kilowatt-hours.

EPA’s Top 10 College and University Partners are (with amount [kWh] and percent of green power usage):

  1. New York University (118,616,000; 100%)
  2. University of Pennsylvania (112,000,000; 29%)
  3. Pennsylvania State University (83,600,000; 20%)
  4. California State University System (78,333,573; 11%)
  5. Duke University (54,075,000; 31%)
  6. University of California, Santa Cruz (50,000,000; 100%)
  7. Northwestern University (40,000,000; 20%)
  8. Western Washington University (38,008,000; 100%)
  9. University of Utah (33,333,000; 13%)
  10. University of Central Oklahoma (26,000,000; 100%).
