November 5, 2001—According to a report in Workplacelaw Network, the European Commission has recommended that the Directive on workforce consultation be amended, with the result that employers may have to comply within two years of implementation, as opposed to the (up to) seven years proposed by the British government. Also, the Commission proposes that actions taken by employers that were not in compliance with the consultation rules should be reversed until the consultation has been carried out, rather than a fine being imposed.
