October 22, 2001—The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work has published a practical guide on how to organize campaigns on health and safety in the workplace. “Health and Safety Campaigning—Getting the Message Across” brings together a wealth of experiences and practical examples from across the European Union (EU) on how to change attitudes and culture towards workplace safety and health.
Poor working conditions have a huge economic impact, as an estimated 2.6-3.8 percent of GNP is lost every year. According to the European Agency, many work-related accidents and occupational diseases can be avoided through preventive measures such as promotional campaigning, which has resulted in dramatic reductions—up to 40 percent—in accident rates.
“Health and Safety Campaigning—Getting the message across” is available in English with a summary fact sheet in 11 languages by visiting the Agency. (A printed version of the English guide is available from the EC’s Publications Office EUR-OP in Luxembourg.
