January 4, 2002—Exelon Power Team and Backbone Mountain Windpower LLC recently announced a twenty-year agreement for Power Team to purchase the output of a 65-megawatt wind facility to be located near the town of Thomas, in Tucker County, W.Va.
The Backbone Mountain Wind Project will include approximately forty-two wind turbines, each rated at approximately 1.5-megawatts. The facility will be the largest commercial wind energy facility in the eastern United States.
The project, which is expected to be ready for commercial operation by December 2002, will interconnect with the Allegheny Power System in the new PJM West Regional Transmission Organization (RTO) and will be integrated with the Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland (PJM) RTO.
