October 2, 2009—Tomra of North America, a wholly owned subsidiary of Tomra Systems ASA (TOMRA) and leading global provider of advanced recycling solutions, announced that Fairfield University in Fairfield, Connecticut, has acquired four of TOMRA’s UNO recycling machines for use by students, faculty and visitors on campus. Students will be able to recycle glass, plastic and aluminum beverage containers in the “reverse vending machines (RVMs); each container will redeem five cents.
“Since beverage containers can often account for up to 50 percent of a trash bin’s volume, UNOs can significantly help reduce the need to empty trash bins and limit littering, said David Frassinelli, assistant VP and Director of Facilities Management. “Curbside recycling was becoming too costly, and the UNO machine is a clean, simple and effective way of collecting the thousands of bottles that students dispose of on campus each month.
The four machines will be placed at student housing facilities, in townhouse units for easy access by students. Each townhouse location will have two machines, one for cans and plastic, and one for glass and plastic. The UNO machines can accept up to 20 containers per minute and have a total capacity of 500 containers per machine, depending on the material.
