May 4, 2005—Falls from roofs or from a structure continue to be the top two causes of construction fatalities among OSHA-investigated cases in 2003, according to research from the University of Tennessee.
The university’s Construction Industry Research and Policy Center has had a contract for the past 13 years to analyze information from the 170 forms filled out by OSHA compliance officers after a construction workplace fatality.
Falls from/through a roof accounted for 10.7 percent of total deaths. The second most common cause of construction fatalities was fall from/with structure, which accounted for 10.5 percent of the total. The third leading cause of death was being crushed or run over by equipment operated by someone else, which accounted for 7.9 percent.
