July 23, 2004—Eighteen teams and individuals were honored recently at the 2004 Presidential Energy and Environmental Awards ceremony held at the State Department in Washington, D.C. This ceremony commends the winners of the Presidential Awards for Leadership in Federal Energy Management, now in its fifth year of honoring exemplary energy efficiency efforts, and winners of the 10th annual Closing the Circle Awards, which recognizes outstanding environmental stewardship.
“The Presidential Awards for Leadership in Federal Energy Management, established by Executive Order 13123, support President Bushs National Energy Policy which calls for America to modernize conservation efforts, increase energy supplies, accelerate the protection and improvement of the environment, and increase our nations energy security,” Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham said. “This policy specifically directs Executive Branch departments and agencies to conserve energy use in their facilities. Todays award winners are leading by example and improving energy management practices in federal agencies.”
The six teams honored with this award today are responsible for efforts that have resulted in annual savings equivalent to the energy used in more than 17,000 typical homes (1.8 trillion Btu).
The Closing the Circle Awards recognize Federal employees for exemplary environmental actions including waste prevention, recycling, green purchasing, environmental management, and sustainable buildings in accordance with Executive Orders 13101 and 13148.
