New Combination Fire/Smoke Dampers, integrating two dampers in one, are designed to reduce the spread of fire and smoke in HVAC systems. By Johnson Controls, the two-position device is tested to 5,000 cycles, intended to prevent the spread of fire (UL 1-hour fire rating) as well as smoke (UL Class II 350F leakage rating). The product also offers 16-gauge galvanized steel blades, dual linkage, and high torque spring to ensure closure during dynamic air flow and allowing it to function as a latch to keep blades closed. Two heat sensor temperature combinations are also included, and there is a three-year warranty on materials and workmanship. Johnson Controls has introduced the dampers as part of its Life Safety damper line. Additional sizes of Combination Fire/Smoke Dampers will be introduced during 2001. High-temperature and direct-mount electric actuators are also under development.
