August 31, 2005—September 5 marks the start of the first Global Security Week, a security awareness initiative run by volunteers.
A number of public and private sector organizations from several countries have expressed their support for Global Security Week. The project is aimed at convincing organizers worldwide to hold security awareness events specifically in the week leading up to September 11.
The week leading up to September 11 was chosen because of its significance for global security since the 2001 attacks. Because of the anniversary, media interest in security matters builds before the 11th and then erodes rapidly.
By designating a whole week rather than a single day, participants in Global Security Week have some flexibility on exactly when they hold their events in successive years.
