January 23, 2006—The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced January 18 that Baxter International, Inc., General Motors Corporation, IBM Corporation, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and SC Johnson are the first corporations to achieve voluntary greenhouse gas reduction goals set through EPA’s Climate Leaders program.
In addition, the following 11 corporations announced new greenhouse gas reduction goals at the event: Baltimore Aircoil Company, EMC, General Electric Company, Haworth, Inc., Lockheed Martin, Mack Trucks, Inc., Marriott International, Inc., Oracle Corporation, STMicroelectronics, Sun Microsystems, Inc., and Volvo Trucks North America, Inc.
Further, 13 new companies have joined Climate Leaders as Partners: Agilent Technologies, CA; American Water, NJ; Boise Cascade, ID; California Portland Cement Co., CA; Citigroup, Inc., NY; Ecolab Inc., MN; Fairchild Semiconductor, ME; General Electric Company, CT; Haworth, Inc., MI.; HSBC North America, IL; Kimberly Clark Corporation, WI; Lucent Technologies, NJ; and Steelcase, Inc., MI.
Through Climate Leaders, EPA now partners with 79 corporations whose US emissions represent an estimated eight percent of total US GHG emissions. EPA estimates that meeting the goals the companies have set will prevent more than 8 million metric tons of carbon emissions equivalents per year, equivalent to the emissions of 5 million cars annually.
