Florida legislature delays state building code

December 19, 2001—Near the end of their special session, Florida lawmakers passed a Senate bill that delays the effective date of the new Florida Building Code from January 1, 2002 to March 1, 2002. In addition, the bill:

  • delays the incorporation of the Uniform Code for Public Educational Facilities into the new Florida Building Code until March 1, 2002
  • clarifies that building permit applications applied for prior to the effective date of the new code are governed by the state minimum code in effect on the date of permit application
  • specifies that the residential swimming pool safety requirement of the Florida Building

Code will take effect January 1, 2002.

AIA Florida and the Building Officials Association of Florida opposed the initiative to delay implementation of the new building code, arguing that delaying the code by three months could further damage Floridas already weakened economy.
