January 7, 2008—Profiles 2007 is a detailed report and a general overview of the demographics, background and compensation data of 4,600 professionals in the facility management field. Compensation data includes base pay and bonus information. Salaries are detailed for specific management levels, industry sectors, facility sizes and geographic areas throughout the United States, Canada, and select countries around the world. This report updates an IFMA member profile study conducted in 2003.
According to the survey, nearly two-thirds (62%) of respondents have a bachelor’s degree or higher (20% have a masters degree or higher). One in five (19%) facility managers have not received any formal education beyond high school. The most common area of study after high school is in business (34%), followed by engineering (17%) and liberal arts (11%). One-tenth of respondents with post-high school education have a degree in facility management.
On average, respondents have 27 years of full-time work experience, 15 years in facility management, 10 years with their current employer, and 6 years in their current position. A little more than one-half (54%) report remaining in the same position over the past two years, but have had an increase in responsibilities. Most respondents (86%) are an internally employed facility/property/asset manager.
Facility managers from the United States comprise 92% of the total sample, with 4% from Canada, and 4% from other countries around the world (Hong Kong, Switzerland, Nigeria, and Belgium are the four most common countries represented in the sample.)
In 2007, 90% of facility management salaries ranged from $43,000 to $144,000. The median salary is $80,000, with the top 10% earning $125,000 or more and the bottom 10% earning a base salary of $50,000 or less. The average salary is $84,945 with total compensation averaging $91,776. Most respondents (59%) are eligible to receive a bonus in their current compensation package. The median bonus is $6,000, with the top 25% receiving a bonus of $14,000 or more and the bottom 25% receiving a bonus of $2,000 or less.
A total of 4,600 facility managers completed the salary survey, the results of which are detailed in this report. The data was collected online from July 6 through July 23, 2007. A total of 60,524 survey invitations were emailed to approximately 12,744 IFMA members and 49,939 subscribers to Building Operating Management magazine. Approximately 13,759 invitations were undeliverable, leaving 46,765 valid invitations. A total of 5,911 invitees responded to the survey for a response rate of 12.6%, and 4,600 completed the entire survey for a final response rate of 9.8%.
