May 19, 2004—Legislation that would mandate forced access for telecom services in both residential and commercial buildings passed the Rhode Island House of Representatives on Wednesday, May 12, 2004. Sponsored by Representative Peter Kilmartin, House Bill 8038 originated out of the concerns of Picerne Cable in trying to compete with statewide giant Cox Cable. The bill now goes to the Senate, and real estate advocates are hopeful that the bill can be defeated there.
BOMA Internationals leadership has sent letters to each State Senator urging them to defeat this bill, and BOMA Internationals Advocacy division has reached out to Governor Carcieris office to lobby for a possible veto if necessary.
The legislation can be viewed online.
