June 29, 2005 — As part of ongoing efforts to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and to pre-treat waste that is landfilled, UK waste producers will need to comply with new legislation and regulations that become effective on July 16, 2005.
The Landfill (England and Wales) Regulations 2002 and the Pollution Prevention and Control (England and Wales) Regulations 2000, in keeping with the EU Landfill Directive, and the introduction of Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) effect what waste can be accepted in landfills.
After July 16, waste producers are no longer able to simply discard and disown their waste. Every business in England and Wales has a legal Duty of Care to ensure that their waste is disposed of responsibly.
A free new leaflet from Cory Environmental, “Key Changes in Waste Legislation and Regulation,” provides useful information for businesses on Waste Acceptance Criteria, the treatment of waste, the Hazardous Waste Regulations, and the legislation on electrical and electronic equipment. It includes details on how to classify waste as hazardous or non-hazardous, and provides links to other useful Web sites.
