Free Web tool helps architects design more energy-efficient buildings

March 6, 2002—GeoPraxis Inc., an energy management solutions provider, recently enhanced its Web-based building design tool, EDR Charette—a free energy analysis tool, available at EnergyDesignResources.com, that allows architects and other building designers to easily estimate the energy costs and environmental impacts of a building’s designs.

The EDR Charette allows users to look at different building types, geometries, windows, insulation levels, and HVAC equipment at the earliest stage of design.

The tool was originally developed in 1999 for Southern California Edison’s Energy Design Resources program; the latest updates expand the tool to the areas served by California’s other major utilities and reflect recent changes to California’s energy code. Despite the Charette’s focus on California climates and codes, building designers from other locations still find the site useful, and it was recently featured in Architectural Record magazine.
