December 22, 2003—The DuPree College of Management, at the Georgia Tech campus, has achieved the LEED Silver Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certified office furniture and wallcoverings were specified as part of the overall goal to provide a superior learning and working experience for students and faculty through improved air quality.
By using GREENGUARD Certified furniture, the Management Building was able to meet the stringent EPA baseline standard for IAQ. The indoor air quality test is a requirement for the Indoor Environmental Quality section of LEED (Credit 3.2). “We could not have passed the air quality testing without low emitting furniture,” commented Dagmar Epsten, President of the Epsten Group in Atlanta, GA. The Epsten Group, Inc. is a leader in sustainable architecture and guided the Georgia Tech project to LEED Certification.
Custom low-emitting furniture did not have to be created for this project. GREENGUARD certifies mainstream products for low chemical emissions and encourages manufacturers to use indoor air quality principles throughout their manufacturing processes. Teknion and Knoll furniture was used for the project, and both have certified their entire product offering. The design team at Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback (TVS) Interiors specified Teknion for 80% of the Management building’s furniture. Atlanta-based TVS is an award winning architecture and design firm.
