GM plan calls for plug-in ready infrastructure for electric vehicles

February 11, 2009—General Motors (GM) is preparing to launch its extended-range electric vehicle, the Chevrolet Volt, and has outlined a comprehensive plan of action to help communities and businesses get ready for the 2010 release.

According to GM, challenges that need to be addressed include consumer incentives to make this early technology more affordable; public and workplace charging infrastructure; consumer-friendly electricity rates and renewable electricity options; government and corporate vehicle purchases; supportive permitting and codes for vehicle charging; and other incentives such as high-occupancy-vehicle (HOV) lane access.

GM plans to test the vehicles in San Francisco, California; Washington, DC; and other plug-in-ready communities. GM outlined its comprehensive plan of action at the Washington Auto Show, where the Chevy Volt was named the 2009 Green Car Vision Award winner.
