December 13, 2002—Herman Miller, Inc.’s recent renovation of a building at its Mainsite headquarters in Zeeland, Michigan, has earned Gold LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification from the US Green Building Council. The renovation included a complete asbestos abatement effort and the installation of energy-efficient lighting. The building, C1, houses key groups and operations including the Finance and Tax departments for the major furniture manufacturer. Architect A. Quincy Jones designed the building in the mid-70s as part of the Mainsite’s expanded master plan.
Primary objectives for the building’s renovation plans aimed at maximizing occupancy capacity, balancing costs with infrastructure investment, and creating an efficient and flexible workplace. Krueck & Sexton Architects of Chicago served as prime consultant and architectural firm of record, and Triangle Construction of Grand Rapids was building contractor.
