May 9, 2008—The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released its updated quarterly lists of leading US green power purchasers as of April 8, 2008, in the federal government and local governments, as well as a list of “green power communities” that EPA says represent what local governments, utilities, businesses, and residents can achieve through collective action.

The Top 10 Federal Government purchasers of green power are:

1. US Air Force: 899,143,000 kWh/year; 9% of total electricity use
2. US Environmental Protection Agency: 299,331,375; 100%
3. US Department of Energy: 157,964,000; 3%
4. US Department of Veterans Affairs: 100,000,000; 3%
5. US General Services Administration / Region 2: 78,930,000; 34%
6. US Army / Fort Lewis: 48,000,000; 20%
7. US Army / Fort Carson: 40,000,000; 29%
8. US NPS / Statue of Liberty NM and Ellis Island: 9,414,000; 100%
9. US Internal Revenue Service: 7,500,000; 3%
10. US Department of Agriculture / HQ Complex: 6,520,000; 15%

The Top 10 Local Government green power purchasers are:

1. City of Dallas, TX: 333,659,840 kWh/year; 40% of total electricity use
2. City of Houston, TX: 262,800,000; 20%
3. Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts: 171,144,000; 54%
4. Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission: 70,000,000; 33%
5. City of San Diego, CA: 66,618,000; 26%
6. Montgomery County Wind Buyers Group: 65,900,000; 10%
7. City of Austin, TX: 58,711,000; 15%
8. Austin (TX) Independent School District: 45,720,000; 28%
9. San Jose/Santa Clara Water Pollution Control Plant: 44,756,718; 49%; and
10. Nassau County, NY: 39,123,419; 17%
