February 12, 2003—PPG Total Service Solutions has partnered with Bio Reaction Industries to offer the Greencell bio-oxidation system to coatings users and other manufacturers. The patented system can reduce volatile organic compound emissions and odors generated by the coatings application process by up to 95 percent. The Greencell bio-oxidation system can also cut operating costs by 15 to 55 percent and lower capital costs by 20 to 35 percent compared to conventional incineration systems, PPG says.
Unlike traditional incineration systems that require fuel and combustion to break down volatile organic compounds, the Greencell bio-oxidation system uses benign, naturally occurring microorganisms to convert the compounds in polluted air streams to carbon dioxide and water. This environmentally friendly process eliminates the production of hazardous combustion byproducts such as nitrous oxide and carbon monoxide and decreases carbon dioxide output caused by incineration.
The system can be used on spray booths, ovens, and other manufacturing processes to help reduce emissions.
