GSA awards honor excellence in federal architecture

March 23, 2009—Exemplary work in public design was spotlighted on March 19 as the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) honored 18 projects at its biennial Design Awards ceremony. This year marks the 15th anniversary of the GSA Design Excellence Program, which is founded on the “Guiding Principles for Federal Architecture” issued by President Kennedy in 1962.

A jury of private design, construction, and art professionals reviewed more than 80 projects for this cycle of GSA’s Design Awards, receiving submissions in 13 categories that included architecture, preservation, engineering, sustainability, interior design, art, urban design, and construction.

The 2009 award-winning projects are:

ARCHITECTURE—Honor: Wayne Lyman Morse U.S. Courthouse, Eugene, OR; San Francisco Federal Building, San Francisco, CA; Citation: U.S. Courthouse, Springfield, MA; U.S. Land Port of Entry, Raymond, MT;

ARCHITECTURE—ON THE BOARDS—Citation: U.S. Courthouse, Austin, TX; U.S. Land Port of Entry, Donna, TX; U.S. Land Port of Entry, Warroad, MN; U.S. Land Port of Entry, Massena, NY;

LEASE CONSTRUCTION—Citation: U.S. Courthouse, Alpine, TX;

MODERNIZATION—Citation: Byron G. Rogers U.S. Courthouse, Denver, CO; Richard Bolling Federal Building, Kansas City, MO;

PRESERVATION—Honor: U.S. Post Office and Courthouse, Brooklyn, NY

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE—Citation: Anthony J. Celebrezze Federal Building, Cleveland, OH;

SUSTAINABILITY—Honor: San Francisco Federal Building, San Francisco, CA;

CONSTRUCTION EXCELLENCE—Honor: Wayne Lyman Morse U.S. Courthouse, Eugene, OR;

ART IN ARCHITECTURE—Honor: Wayne Lyman Morse U.S. Courthouse, Eugene, OR; and

The awards program is open to contract design professionals, contractors, artists, and/or organizations that completed or are working on projects for GSA or under GSA authority, as well as current or former GSA employees with professional responsibility for a GSA-authorized project.
