GSA design awards honor excellence in public architecture and design

April 9, 2003—The U.S. General Services Administration honored twenty-four projects in the GSA Design Awards 2002 competition in March. They included:

  • A proposed design for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Satellite Operations Facility, Suitland, Md.;
  • A seismic upgrade of the Wallace F. Bennett Federal Building in Salt Lake City, Utah;
  • Renovation and restoration of the Jose V. Toledo US Post Office and Courthouse in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico; and
  • A Tenant Guide for the Sandra Day O’Connor US Courthouse in Phoenix, Ariz.

“Overall, we tended to honor buildings that effectively addressed urban design challenges and maintained a strong sense of openness,” said Boston architect Moshe Safdie, chair of the awards jury. “We also admired projects that were environmentally responsible.”
