GSA highlights federal design excellence

October 31, 2008—The US General Services Administration (GSA) recently announced the opening of the exhibition “New Federal Architecture: The GSA Design Excellence Program” at the University of Miami School of Architecture through November 26, 2008. It will provide the public with an opportunity to see federal architecture designed by the nation’s leading architects.

“Federal buildings are part of a nation’s legacy,” said David L. Winstead, GSA’s Commissioner of Public Buildings. “They are symbolic of what the government is about, not just places where public business is conducted. As the primary builder of the civilian federal government buildings, GSA seeks, through its Design Excellence Program, to ensure that what it builds on behalf of the American people is of the highest quality and has enduring value.”

Architects represented in the exhibition include nationally renowned firms, Arquitectonica, Gwathmey Siegel & Associates, Kallmann McKinnell & Wood, Michael Graves, Moshe Safdie, Richard Meier & Partners, and Smith-Miller + Hawkinson. In addition, artist’s renderings and maquettes of commissioned artworks by prominent artists Jim Dine, Sol LeWitt, and Maya Lin, accompany some of the models.
